Sligo duo bring home double gold!

SLIGO’S two Special Olympics athletes are on their way home from the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens with a world Gold medal each. Adrian Cornwall is expected back in Sligo today [Tuesday] while his Team Ireland team-mate, Joseph Cullen, will be back on Wednesday.

Strandhill’s Cullen was first to strike gold on Friday in the Aquatics 100 metres Individual Medley.

He was also part of an aquatics relay team that came fifth.

The following day, Saturday, Tonnapubblebased Adrian Cornwall, a native of Boyle, made it a double for Sligo by winning gold in badminton. Adrian also played his part in the badminton mixed doubles when he teamed up with Bernadette Kennedy from Gorey, County Wexford, to win silver.

The closing ceremony for the World Games took place in Athens last night [Monday]. Most of the Sligo-based back up team of coaches and trainers arrive home today [Tuesday].

Speaking at a send-off function before their departure for Greece, Adrian Cornwall correctly predicted his win “I’m going to go for gold in Athens!”  The badminton player had been training hard at Sligo Tennis Club.

Speaking at the same function, swimmer Joseph Cullen said: “I feel I’m well prepared. It’s great to be going to the World Games.” Joseph trains at Sligo Regional Sports Centre, Cleveragh, where he has worked for 16 years.

The Sligo duo received a rousing send-off in Source Sligo at the corner of Harmony Hill and John Street.

Members of the public joined with family, friends and representatives of the Special Olympics Connacht branch. The president of Sligo Chamber of Commerce, Gerry Moore, was among the large attendance.
